TO START, WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHERE DO YOU LIVE NOW?
Originally from Connecticut, but I’ve spent the majority of my life on the west coast in southern California. My husband and I just moved back from San Diego during the summer of 2020 and are now living in Woodbridge.
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN THE FINANCE INDUSTRY? WHAT ARE SOME PREVIOUS ROLES YOU HELD THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER?
Up until my MBA, my education and work experience were in the animal science/biology world. I’ve worked and interned with many veterinarians (equine, small animal, marine mammal). I then spent a little time working in the non-profit sector for an organization that offers equine therapy to recovering veterans, first responders, and their families.
My father has worked in the financial services industry for over 20 years, specifically in tech and operations. Even though he is not an adviser or financial planner, he encouraged me to check out the industry, thinking I would enjoy it - and he was right. I started with an independent, more traditionally structured firm (BD-affiliated) as an advisor, and realized in a relatively short amount of time that I wanted to be in the RIA, fee-only space. I was fortunate to find such a firm and work in their planning department until we moved away from California, and passed the CFP exam this past September.
WHEN YOU AREN’T WORKING, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?
I’ve ridden horses since I was a toddler and would definitely say that’s my passion. I could easily spend the entire day at the barn, but I love almost anything outdoors. We do a lot of hiking and I grew up on the sound, so I love water sports and fishing. I’m excited for more frequent ski trips this year, and have gotten into gardening over the last few years, so in the warmer seasons, I’ll be working on my green thumb. I also love reading and traveling – hoping COVID is rounding the curve to the finish line soon!
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE THAT ANYONE EVER GAVE YOU WHEN IT COMES TO BUSINESS?
Nobody plans to fail, they fail to plan.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU AT WORK?
No two days look exactly alike for me, but on a high level, my days consist of client meetings and correspondence, working on building and updating plans, doing research to stay up to date on the changing landscape of the world where it affects personal finances, and helping support the BWC team wherever I can. Despite being in the face of COVID, we have also recently re-booted our Women on Wealth initiative, which I think is both super valuable and a great time.
WHAT WAS THE BEST CONCERT THAT YOU EVER ATTENDED?
I have to say George Straight. He sings like he just belongs there on the stage. Like he was made for it.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TRIP THAT YOU HAVE EVER TAKEN? WHAT DESTINATION IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
July 2020, my husband and I drove to Connecticut with our dog from San Diego. We took a month-long road trip, and it was one of the most incredible trips I’ve ever been on. Our country is so diverse, and we stopped in many incredible places – Grand Canyon, the Olympic Peninsula, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore, to name a few. I highly recommend a “local” road trip if you ever have the chance!
My destination list is a mile long, but Africa is pretty high up there!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TYPE OF FOOD, AND WHAT IS THE BEST MEAL THAT YOU HAVE EVER EATEN?
I’m a foodie and love all different types of dishes, but I always get excited for hibachi! The best meal I’ve ever eaten was in Thailand. We took a cooking class that ended up being just us and the chef. He took us to the market where we picked out all our ingredients fresh, and then back to his cooking school where we made some of the most delicious Thai food you can imagine.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY AND WHY?
Thanksgiving. It’s not even about the meal (although, of course, I enjoy it). It’s a day when most people take the time to appreciate their blessings.
WHEN ARE YOU HAPPIEST?
When I’m riding or spending time with family and close friends.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY?
Invest and celebrate the option of an early retirement! I would also love for my parents to retire and allow me to try to pay back even a small fraction of the sacrifices they’ve made for me.
WHAT WOULD A PERFECT DAY LOOK LIKE?
Taking our dog for a walk in the morning, going to the barn for a ride, and spending the rest of the day with family.
CAN YOU GIVE ME A QUOTE THAT CAN RELATE YOUR VIEW OF LIFE TO?
“It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.” – Babe Ruth
“The way we deal with uncertainty says a lot about whether Jesus is ahead of us leading or just behind us carrying our stuff.” – Bob Goff
YOU’RE GIVEN THE ABILITY TO HAVE DINNER WITH ANYBODY IN THE WORLD (REAL, FICTIONAL- DEAD OR ALIVE). WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
Jesus Christ - so much to gain and so little pressure.
IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER IN THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD IT BE? WHY?
I think I would fly, which is ironic considering I’m really not a huge fan of airplanes. But it would be so cool!
IF YOU COULD BE ANY ANIMAL IN THE WORLD, WHAT ANIMAL WOULD YOU BE? AND WHY?
An eagle. No natural predators, and of course, flying.
